Hollywood and the Oscars

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, in California, and it is famous as the historical centre of movie studios and movie stars. In 1923 was born her first sign “Hollywoodland”, than was soon changed in Hollywood, in 1987, for the arrival of Pope John Paul II.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame was created in 1958 as a tribute to the artists working in the entertainment industry. It is on Hollywood Boulevard and there are about 2.000 five pointed stars set in the pavement. In 1929 the Academy of Motion Picture had the idea of rewarding the best movies, so was built a trophy. The first person that saw this trophy was Margaret Herrick who said it looked like his uncle, named Oscar; from here the so-called Oscar award was born. The Oscar ceremony takes place between February and March at the Kodak Theatre and it is now the most important event of the year for the cinematographic industry. Men wear black tie, women wear long dresses and diamonds are always in fashion on the red carpet. After the ceremony there is the Governor's Ball. This is the official celebration following the Oscar Awards presentation. Than, guests can go to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and, for stars who are not invited at the Academy Awards ceremony, there is also Sir Elton John's party and all the money derived from the tickets goes to his Foundation Charity.
